Man : Woman : Human

...In addition to our immediate consciousness, which is of a thoroughly personal nature..., there exists a second psychic system of a collective, universal, and impersonal nature which is identical in all individuals. This collective unconscious does not develop individually, but is inhereted.
—Carl Jung

In identifying that we are all made up of both a collective unconscious as well as an individual conscious, one realizes that everyone is a unique self based on an inherent history- the history of humanity. It is the social environment surrounding the individual which pushes certain aspects into the conscious realm while others are suppressed into the unconsious. This body of work attempts to bridge this divide within each of us.

In viewing and interacting with the work, we are confronted with familiar objects and iconographic forms. While we can all identify the traditionally male and female objects we see, when placed together, their context and content becomes unfamiliar. In an attempt to make some sense out of what is on display, we are forced to draw upon and access our collective history, our human history, leading us down a less familiar path of questioning and even doubt. It is in these questions, not in their conclusions, where a greater understanding of both the self and the whole of humanity can begin. The connection is strengthened by the physical awareness of both the object and the medium, whether in a wearable or non-wearable format. The relationship created between the maker, the viewer, the object, the medium, and the context all lead to an intangible idea of what lies within all of humanity, of which we are individually a part.
